Civil Partnerships

My building is holding its first civil partnerships (gay weddings) today. The place is all scrubbed up, with flowers leading up the stairs, and the security guards looking all polished. BBC London are on the steps looking bored and waiting for couples to start turning up. I feel strangely proud of our little island today. It will be better once we have one type of wedding which is open to all, but it's definitely a step in the right direction.

I have to say I've been watching all these "marriages" and getting a nice warm fuzzy feeling. It's great. I agree that it'd be good if both straights and gays could have the same ceremony but for now, and whilst the religious and right would try to stop such a thing, this will do :)

All I need now is to find a wife! Hoorah!

As heard on Peep Show last week: "There are She-males, hookers, Thai brides... all part of life's rich tapestry."

Some bode obviously gave them actual directions for how to get there and stuff...

I find the choice of language that gets used around this topic interesting. Who thought up the term 'civil partnerships' and why? Why is the word marriage not being used officially? If our society is apparantly now comfortable with the idea of gay marriage then why label it any other way? Why does Meg put 'civil partnerhips' in inverted commas whereas Jenny does the same with the word 'marriages'? What is the meaning of marriage?
